Unstuck: A “How I Quit My Day Job” Story!
Peter stared at the cheerful winter wonderland scene in front of him. Not for the first time he wished he could see how the weather actually was outside, but this stupid cubicle wall obscured his view. Lately it also obscured his mind.
He had felt so happy when he landed this job 5 years ago. “A big achievement,” everyone told him, clapping him on shoulder, “to get a position at a world renowned insurance company directly after college. Especially in this tough economy!”
At first it was great. Nice colleagues, a pleasant enough boss, decent pay, great medical and dental benefits, and free lunch. When the initial excitement wore off though, Peter realized that processing insurance claims and reviewing policy modifications wasn’t as satisfying as he tried to tell himself.
Being stuck for 50+ minutes in rush-hour traffic every day didn’t make it any better either. Peter felt stuck, literally and metaphorically. He became moody and bad tempered. His wife got so concerned that she convinced him to see a therapist. The therapist advised him to follow his passion, to do something that he really enjoyed doing.
Well, he could talk all day about international economics, especially all the intricate details and possible pitfalls of an import / export business.
