Entrepreneur Spotlight: How Decorating Cakes Became My Ticket to Freedom

Tell us about your website, www.make-fabulous-cakes.com. When and why did you start your site?

I started my site in 2008, after I read about SiteSell and SBI! on Steve Pavlina’s personal development website. I had a young son back then and I was looking into finding a way to be able to work from home. I had a very stressful office job at that time and I felt that there was no real value and passion in what I was doing.

For you as a Mom, what are the most important benefits of having an online business?

The biggest benefit for me as a Mom is the flexibility with my working schedule and the location on where I am working.  I can do my work just about anywhere as long as there is an internet connection.  I mostly work on my website from home but if I do travel, like right now (I am at my sister’s wedding in Mexico), I can still check my online business and work on it, if I have to.

So far, what has been the biggest challenge for you?

The biggest challenge for me of working from home is getting disciplined enough to follow through on what I need to do. Because there is no boss to tell me what to do and to set deadlines, I have to do this for myself and sometimes this has been a challenge.

Why did you choose SBI! to build your website / online business?

I saw what other successful SBI’ers were able to do and I wanted that as well.  I chose SBI! because you learn step by step not only how to build a website but how to make a business out of it.

With the rise of mobile traffic, what steps have you done to give your visitors the best experience on their smart phones and tablets?

Has your life changed since you started your site? Can you describe these changes for us?

Yes, my life has changed in various ways. First off, I was able to quit my stressful job and work on what I am most passionate about which is cake decorating. I feel that by showing others especially beginners how to decorate cakes, I have somehow given something of value. I love it when my visitors tell me that my site has helped them in making that special cake.

What one piece of advice would you give a Mom who is just getting started as an online entrepreneur?

My biggest advice is to start NOW. Don’t wait for the best idea and don’t wait for perfection. Do what you are passionate about, and do it now. The sooner you can get things off the ground the sooner you see the results.
