What The SEO Experts Think You Should Be Doing Yourself

Written By: Mike Allton in CTPM | September 16, 2015

Every once in awhile, my wife asks me to do something for her around the house. Sometimes it’s basic stuff like hanging some pictures, and sometimes it’s a bit more advanced, like installing a new light switch.

But sometimes, she talks about doing something that’s beyond my skills, like, laying new hardwood floors. Sure, there are plenty of DIY videos out there and articles I can read to tell me how. But is that really a good idea?

How good a job will I be able to do, compared to someone who has been installing hardwood floors for years? How much longer will it take me?

When it comes to building an online business and website, there are a myriad of things to learn and do. One of which, of course, is Search Engine Optimization, a topic we discuss regularly. But, like any learned skill, we always need to carefully consider where to invest our time.

Some elements of search engine optimization should be added to our toolbox – something we’d take upon ourselves to do day in and day out. But aren’t there other elements where it might make more sense to get help? Either professional training or paid consulting?

Here, to help us with this dilemma, are quite a few experts and consultants in the SEO industry. Each of them has taken the time to answer the following questions:

What is one SEO technique that every online business and website owner should strive to do themselves?

What is one SEO technique that every online business and website owner should consider getting help for?

Let’s see what they have to say.

What is one SEO technique that every online business and website owner should strive to do themselves?

Business owners need to understand the landscape they are working in. How many people are ‘looking for what’?

If someone thinks that a keyword has 100,000 searches, but in fact has 100, then it will shift their focus in other areas of the business e.g. language use on printed promo materials. Search is a reflection of a ‘shared mind’, and understanding that gives them a big advantage.

The biggest issue I see is not technical. It is when people simply do not get any traction on their content. And I am talking more content than product based SEO. Without a community of people around who are waiting to engage, people’s blog posts just sit there lonely. As such, I think community building and outreach is what needs to be outsourced, once of course people know what they are doing ‘on site’.

What is one SEO technique that every online business and website owner should strive to do themselves?

Creating a customized checklist to pick the best keyword(s) for their next video post or blog post in the niche they want to dominate  online. Not every keyword found with high search demand and profitability will automatically bring them online conversions. Many clients come to me with a keyword research report from another SEO expert and want to start creating content immediately without analyzing if these keywords really are the ones their niche market is searching for online.  A keyword, no matter how high the search demand or profitability is, loses it’s value if it is just chosen for its numbers of monthly searches or profitability. I see a lot that websites gain the wrong, not targeted traffic, often times difficult or impossible to convert. Because it’s the wrong traffic no opt ins can be gained nor sales be made. It’s much more about understanding the user intent behind the keyword and what the searcher had in mind by typing it in the search bar. The online business and website owners are the ones who know the desires and needs of their chosen market and can make educated decisions when picking their best keywords to attract and convert their niche market.

Building their site structure, without any questions. I experience again and again that business and website owners just look for keywords for a single blog or video post and spend a lot of time researching this but totally neglect to think about what they are want their website to be recognized for. Yes, every post should be created to rank well on the search engines. Many forget or they are perhaps not aware of that the purpose of every post and page on a website is to support the website’s overall recognition as authority. It’s the same as building a house. How many of us build their own house or more than one house in their lifetime? You would hire a building contractor and an architect to help you. The same counts for building the site structure of your website. Getting help from an expert helps you to save time, do it in an economical manner, and build it right the first time.

What is one SEO technique that every online business and website owner should use?

It’s definitely hard to point out just one SEO technique that every website owner should be familiar with. From keyword research to link building – I’m pretty sure that business owners should know all the basics. They don’t have to spend their time building campaigns themselves of course, but they have to be able to set up the proper tasks, monitor their progress, and measure their results later.

But if I had to choose one – I would choose keyword research and content creation. Maybe I’m saying this because I’m a content person, but still, let me explain.

Your product, your users and their needs, the story you want to tell them – no one knows these things better than you. And this fundamental knowledge is needed to create great content. SEO and content marketing are inseparable, and together they are rocket fuel that can lift your business to new heights.

So if you, as a business owner, at least can suggest for your team a topic for a new article or give advice on research, infographics, or e-books on targeting keywords, these could be a great help for your business.

What is one SEO technique that every online business and website owner should consider getting help with?

This one is easy, and I have no hesitations about my answer – ask for someone’s help for becoming mobile-friendly and handling mobile optimization. Saying that being mobile-friendly is important is simply not enough – 80 percent of Internet users use smartphones to search the web (Smart Insights). That 80 percent means traffic, users, and profit business owners will miss out on without being mobile-friendly.

But everything connected to mdot or responsive website development and mobile SEO might seem to be too tricky for some business owners. This requires not just a wide knowledge, but a deep one, and I’m sure that not every businessman will have the courage, and more importantly, the time to handle the development, testing and optimization processes.

But still I would suggest that business owners build a knowledge base to be able to choose between a mobile or responsive version – the rest they can easily shift to the shoulders of professionals.

What is one SEO technique that every online business and website owner should strive to do themselves?

I think posting to social media is something every website owner should do themselves. Building a relationship with your customers is essential and it’s hard for someone else to fake on your behalf. Getting involved in conversations and answering questions on Facebook or LinkedIn may take time, but it is a great way to build trust and pre-sell.

What is one SEO technique that every online business and website owner should consider getting help for?

There are many of these, and most times a website owner may not be aware of which techniques need some work. We are all often too close and emotionally involved with our own websites to see the faults. A fresh pair of eyes is always a help for spotting possible improvements for SEO. Are your titles and descriptions appealing? Do your pages address the search intent of the keyword? Does your page flow logically and read well? Is your internal linking clear?

Even if you know where the faults lie, sometimes it is just a matter of lack of time to put things right. Getting someone else to put things right sooner rather than later may well be a good investment.

Get your brand values out there. If your are not working to project your identity, passion and core values at every moment where your brand is making contact with your customers then in all likelihood you have not yet managed to align your core values to your mission statement to the way you really work. It also means that the internal level of trust within your company is not as high as it should be which is going to make it difficult to really gain the trust of those you market to. You can think about hiring someone to do all this for you, but this is so close to your brand’s DNA that really, if you’re outsourcing the effort you are simply wasting time and money. You may get lucky sometimes with those you hire but those who are “lucky finds” in that department do not come cheap and at any rate you still need to be involved at some stage.

What is one SEO technique that every online business and website owner should consider getting help for?

The proper use of structured data within your website. You can try doing this yourself but letting a professional help you is probably the best investment of your time and money and you will see the SEO benefits from a sustained effort here, very quickly.

Final Thoughts

The one recommendation we heard over and over was that every business owner should be learning and engaging regularly in keyword research. But, like many of us, you’re probably wondering where to begin. I’d suggest reviewing our post that explains a little more about keyword research, and then offers a series of tools and techniques that you can use to get started.
