Domains -- How to Do Them Right
Since everyone and his uncle has gotten into the domain
registration business, the hype and pressure to go out and
register tons of domain names has become overwhelming.
Relax... it's not necessary to own the rights to every
permutation and combination of words that you can think of.
Take your time. Think of one good word that fits your
business plan. Here's a good resource for domain-name
brain-storming...

(Clever name, unique, short, and "nameboy" says it all. Boy,
these guys know how to pick a domain. See MYSS! for details
on what makes a great domain.)
Got your name? Great, register it and stick with it.
We still use Network Solutions (sheer inertia), but if you're
price-sensitive, I'd be partial to TOTALNIC...

(Cheaper ones have emerged, but I'm not sure about their
quality or integrity.)
Named and registered? That's it. You're done. You just
don't need more domains unless you want to build Phase III
content sites that funnel traffic to your sales site (more
on this in MYSS!, and I'm still working on "Phase IV").

But otherwise, you just don't need a ton of domains. So many
companies start a new domain for each new product. Mistake.
Pick one name and build your brand. I'll use ourselves as
an example...

A subdomain has the same importance as a regular site. But
it's far more powerful in one way -- it keeps the
"sitesell.com" front and center. That's the brand. Multiple
domains for different products dilutes the brand and creates
uncertainty in your visitor's mind.
Now, one important tip...
Don't build a house upon a foundation of sand. I'd guess
that 99% of entrepreneurs register and build their business
around a domain name without verifying its trademark status.
Big, big boo-boo. If someone owns the trademark, they can
take you to court. At the very least, use of your domain
can be suspended. If your domain is too close to the
trademark, you'll lose it. Bye-bye e-biz.

I talked to Alex Chaux, VP Business Development. I really
like what they're doing.
I use them for new product naming too. While you don't
*have* to register a trademark for your new product names,
you must make sure that your name does not violate someone
else's trademark. Or you'll be sorrrrrrrrry!
Once you see that it's "trademark-clean," just put a "TM" on
the name, and add a trademark notice in your legals (see
bottom of pages in MYKS! site for good example).
In general, there's no need to spend the $1-2,000 to
actually register that trademark. Of course, if you're a
larger company or this is an extremely important project and
you have the disposable dollars, registering it gives you
that little extra bit of protection and actionability.
But, in general, you'll be on the right side of the 80-20
rule if you "check-and-TM" for free.

Bottom line with domains? Relax...
You only need one for the business itself. Choose
carefully, because it's an important part of building your
brand. Make sure it's available as a trademark before
registering it. Register other domains if part of your
traffic-building strategies include Phase III content sites.
