Sales from the EDGE
Breaking Through the "White Noise" Of Selling on the Net
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
>From time to time, the EDGE publishes important updates that
you need to SELL on the Net. Most "latest and greatest" Net
marketing & sales developments simply waste our time. Today's
"hot new technology" is tomorrow's "whatever happened to?"
Occasionally, though, something comes along that STICKS. It
might NOT even be NEW... but we need to be reminded. When
that happens, the EDGE cuts through all the "white noise" of
Web marketing. It explains the issue and outlines clearly
how YOU can best take advantage of it.
SALES FROM THE EDGE is sent ONLY to SiteSell product owners.
SBI!'s Directory HQ Launches
How do you improve upon the best?
Simple...
Add more exciting, intuitive features that further address
the needs of all small-businesses doing business on the Net,
with NO accompanying increase in cost.
Funny thing... that's the whole SBI! philosophy! :-)
As you know, SBI!'ers are already privy to the most
comprehensive and intuitive set of Search Engine tracking
and reporting tools on the planet (submission,
index-checking, re-submission, rank-reporting, keyword
search reporting... ALL automated, optimized).
And then, of course, you have SBI!'s Search Engine
Optimization tools, including Analyze It!, to bring your SEO
skills up to the level of the pros. And...
Then add the Pay-Per-Click bidding and research tools
available in the Manager, as well as the tracking tools
available in the PPC HQ.
Yes, SBI! has all the Search Engine bases covered...
And what are the bottom line results?
SBI! sites vacuum in targeted traffic on an unprecedented
level...
How well does SBI! help you build traffic?
====
As a regional manager for a medical imaging
company, I wanted to have control over
web-based sales promotions and marketing
programs that would increase sales in my
region. My headquarters website was just not
getting us any new customers (or leads).
Site Build It! changed all that. Our local
SBI! site does a weekly online promotion,
sells product online via PayPal and has also
started a very professional looking
newsletter. We link into the main HQ website
as needed. SBI! is one of the best sales
tools I have ever used. Every salesperson in
every industry should use SBI!.
We are just coming up to our second
anniversary and will break 50,000 visitors
for the first time this month. Since August,
our traffic has tripled. Our first year we
had 77,000 visitors and this year we will
have 293,000. We have had visitors from over
90 different countries the past few months.
The word that comes immediately to mind is
"remarkable". When I purchased SBI about 9
months ago, I wasn't sure exactly what to
expect. I just knew that I wanted to start a
web business and didn't want all the
technology hassles. So when I read about the
great features offered by SBI, the decision
was a no-brainer. Plus I was familiar with
all of Ken's products which truly do
OVER-deliver.
As I've worked with SBI over the months, I
continue to be amazed. For example, I've
noticed from time to time, and who knows for
what reason, a search engine will drop one of
my pages. Well, no worries. SBI sees that and
resubmits the page. Of course that's only one
of SBI's amazing features. But sometimes it's
the little things that can make a BIG
difference.
There's no other system that I know of that
acts as a "virtual web master"....at least
not at these prices.
Also, thanks to SBI, the Alexa ranking for my
site, www.home-decorating-made-easy.com,
is now at 102,127 and steadily improving. And
you wouldn't believe the number of new business
ideas that have come to mind, now that I'm
free to focus on more important parts of my
business. SBI has definitely set the standard.
All I can say is, this is the beginning of a
beautiful relationship. Just the way business
should work.
So far, we've talked about Search Engines and Pay-Per-Clicks
(PPCs). What about Directories?
Ah-h, that's where our *news* comes in...
Directories, of course, are a different matter altogether.
They are compiled by real humans (not spiders), and require
manual submission -- a process that is impossible to
automate. Directories used to report results like this...
category > sub-category > sub-sub-category > sub-sub-sub-category
But now most directories report search results much like
Search Engines do. What's the significance of this?
It means that we can report upon how well you rank at them!
Important?
You bet!
The 3 big directories -- Yahoo!, Open Directory, and
LookSmart can provide vital, profit-generating traffic to
your site in two important ways...
1) from searches originating directly from their own
portals (i.e., a LookSmart referral originating directly
from LookSmart.com)
Or...
2) from searches originating from their SE partners who
supplement crawler-based listings with directory listings
(for example, a LookSmart referral originating from MSN or
AltaVista).
Of course, with the exception of Open Directory, it costs
*real* money to list in a directory these days.
So it's vital to...
o measure the ROI (Return on Investment) from such an
expenditure
o evaluate the possible profitability of a paid listing
o verify the listing is delivering as reported (important
for a LookSmart listing, which operates on a Pay-Per-Click
basis).
The new Directory HQ at Site Central does all this... and
more! By tracking directory-driven traffic and identifying
its source of origin, there will be no more second-guessing
the importance and performance of such listings!
-----
The new functionality comprises two major new reports...
1) The Keyword Ranking Report
The "reporting" table is very similar to the one present in
the SE HQ, which tells you exactly where every page on your
site ranks for every one of your keywords.
2) The Keyword Searches Report
This report tells you how each of your Web pages was found.
SBI! tells you which keywords found which page, and even
tells you if the referral originated from the directory
itself (i.e., Open Directory), or one of its partners, (i.e.,
AOL -- which uses Open Directory results as a back-up for
crawler listings). And it sorts results by page, or by
keyword... so you get the complete picture...
o how many times all pages were found by each directory
o how many times each page was found by each directory
o the breakdown of that directory according to how many
times each *version* of that directory found that page.
o the breakdown of that directory according to how many
times each keyword found that page.
Super-simple. Super-useful, too -- this way you know *who*
really delivers the goods! And how! :-)
--
On a "bigger picture" scale, here's what really excites me.
Consider these SBI! tools and reports...
1) Search Engine HQ
o automatic submission, and re-submission (as needed)
o Submit-Spider-List Report
o Keyword Ranking Report
o Keyword Searches Report (now sorted two ways, too)
2) Analyze It! -- turns you into a top-notch Search Engine
Optimizing (SEO) expert.
3) Pay-Per-Click (PPC) HQ
o SBI! Manager's PPC research and mass-submission tools
o Ranking Report
and now...
4) Directory HQ
o the brand new and unique Keyword Searches Report
o the brand new Keyword Ranking Report (sorted two ways).
As an ensemble, these three HQs are the best, most complete,
more *effective* system of tools and reports, supplemented
with the most up-to-date summary of information and
strategies possible -- distilled to be at your fingertips
whenever you want it.
Is there a better overall resource on the Internet?
At any price?
Nope.
It's the world's most powerful engine/directory/PPC, just
ready and waiting to build your TRAFFIC... your business.
I can't say enough about Site Build It!
Every month my traffic (and affiliate income)
grows and grows. This month, I've been
getting well over 2000 unique visitors a day
strictly from search engine traffic resulting
in sales of close to $50,000 with commissions
of $200 to $400 per day and I haven't even
started advertising, sending out my ezine, or
requesting links yet. And this was the very
first website I've ever built! It's great
knowing that you can make a comfortable
living online with something that interests
you rather than having to try and promote
internet marketing type offers.
I've been amazed at the traffic-building
capabilities of SBI!. I am an affiliate for
several murder mystery games publishers;
their games are sold as pdf files. I've had a
website for a couple of years now, but
decided to try SBI! to see if it lived up to
the hype. I'm happy to say that it certainly
does! The site has been live now for a
fraction over three months, and already it
has nearly a quarter of the traffic that its
older brother has! It also has a couple of
top Google positions, and a better Alexa
rating!
A year ago, prompted by the success of
selling other people's murder mystery games,
I started my own company - and we have just
bought another SBI! based on its performance
so far. We're already looking forward to the
e-goods module.
My site remains #1 at Yahoo out of, now, out
of 344,000 sites competing for my most
important keyword. #1 and #2 at Google. #5
and #12 at MSN. Top 10s in the others. And
so many top 10s for so many keywords that my
site now ranks in the top 120,000 sites on
the Web. Last month I had 7581 visitors and
11,952 page views, increasing month after
month. I feel that SiteBuildIt has helped me
remain on top of my market. I feel
victorious each time I am listed above the
"heavy-hitters" in my market. SiteBuildIt has
been my GREAT EQUALIZER!
Yes...
It *is* the world's most powerful engine/directory/PPC, just
SBI!'s SpamCheck II Launches
Remember SpamCheck? Gangbusting success. So much so, that
the sincerest form of flattery emerged...
Imitation. Yes, copycats.
Of course, you had to fill in huge forms to get a report.
Or pay money. And we don't consider its usage to constitute
permission to be added to any list. Ugh -- the only e-mail
you'll ever receive from us is the report itself.
So SpamCheck continued to soar... until it almost pulled our
server down. Yes... it slow-w-w-w-w-wed... to a crawl.
We understood the need of Webmasters to deliver "good"
e-mail past increasingly aggressive filtering software. But
we did *not* understand exactly how BIG the problem was.
-----SIDEBAR-----
Originally, we designed SpamCheck for users
of SBI! who use the MailOut module in SBI!.
The MailOut module is pretty amazing...
This e-zine subscription-and-delivery module
provides SBI! users with the ability to take
subscriptions to an e-zine from any part of
their SBI! site... and, of course, the
ability to mail to that list in both HTML and
TEXT. MailOut has proved immensely popular
with current SBI! subscribers. After all...
No-Ads e-zine providers cost *more* than
the entire SBI! bundle, especially when they
include every "professional" feature known
(ex., Opening Rates of your zines,
bounce-back management par excellence,
automatic conversion of HTML version into
text, automatic delivery in the correct
format, a Web- based SpamCheck, etc., etc.)
The ability to grow, manage, and contact a
list of subscribers is one of the most
important aspects of successful e-marketing
-- especially if you happen to be using the
Net to sell your own e-good, or to build a
client base for your services.
For more about SBI! features...
http://buildit.sitesell.com/index.html#FEATURES
NOTE: While SpamCheck is a feature of SBI!,
it resides on SBI! servers, so it was not
affected. Also, it's super-fast, since it's
entirely Web-based. So, if you're an SBI!
user, that's why you didn't feel a slowdown.
-----SIDEBAR-----
Now, where was I? Oh yes, back to the incredible demand for
SpamCheck...
The rapidly building demand became overwhelming. It
resulted in increasingly long delays between sending an
e-mail to spamcheck@sitesell.net and receiving your report.
So-o-o-o-o-o...
I dusted off my trusty whip, and put the tech team to work
combatting this situation. The end result has been a
"beefed up," more robust version of SpamCheck.
We've allocated SpamCheck to its own server to facilitate
lightning-fast responses. Of course, we've also installed
the latest version of the SpamAssassin software, so you
benefit automatically from all of its improvements. As
well, we translate more obscure SpamAssassin messages into
regular English, so you don't have to figure out
"geek-speak."
So my challenge to you now is...
Try and slow us down! :-)
-----
SpamCheck II is now in business, big time!
To use it, simply send an e-mail to...
spamcheck@sitesell.net
Put the words... TEST (in caps, but without the
quotations)... *before* your Subject in the Subject line.
You'll receive your report back in seconds (if volume is
especially heavy, in minutes... max!)
Enjoy... the best is back in town. :-)
-----SIDEBAR-----
SpamCheck is just one small part of MailOut,
which itself is just one of 20+ modules that
form the system that is SBI!.
SBI! is revolutionary. Not just a simple
hosting solution, it's the perfect business-
building solution. It is changing the way
business is done on the Net.
Our only problem? We're not sure of which
slogan to use...
E-commerce for the rest of us.
Web sites that WORK.
Why build a Web SITE...
... when you can build a BUSINESS?
So many slogans... so little time. ;-)
------
SpamCheck is *also* a powerful PREselling tool
for our 5 Pillar Affiliates. SiteSell.com's
5 Pillar Program is widely regarded as the
best on the Net, with truly unique, powerful
PREselling tools. We depend 98%+ on the
recommendations and support of the SiteSell
affiliates. Those who commit to the
program have built substantial incomes.
Is Free & Low-Cost Traffic Dead? Not Even Close!
Some Net-marketing pundits have been heard to say that free
traffic is dead. Far from it!
Build your Web business on a solid foundation...
o well-researched keywords with high demand and low supply
o well-written, credentializing, high quality content
o well-crafted Search Engine Optimization
... and low cost SE traffic is yours for the taking.
People, even the experts, tend to forget a basic fact...
No matter what the state of the Net, no matter how
competitive or congested it may become in the future, the
hands of the SEs and directories will always be tied to some
degree. They *must* deliver the best and most relevant
sites to their customers... i.e., surfers.
That means there will always be a place on the Net for high
quality content sites, and there will always be plenty of
free traffic for those sites. Of course, if your site does
not deliver much in the way of quality or content, you can't
reasonably expect any SE or directory to oblige by pointing
traffic your way. But if you cover those bases well, you
will be amply rewarded!
With that said, let's investigate the big players in the
traffic-generating business today, with tips on how to get
the most from each.
--------
The SEs
--------
1) Google
There's no doubt about it... if you want traffic, you need
Google on your side. When you consider that it is powering
secondary engines like AOL, Netscape (plus many others), and
currently providing the bulk of the listings for the mighty
Yahoo!, you can't afford to be in Google's bad books.
Google, through its own site and its huge partner network,
will drive traffic on an unprecedented scale.
So... how do you keep Google happy?
Google loves quality content and optimized pages as much as
any other SE. They also allot some extra emphasis to your
site's in-pointing links (i.e., those sites that link to
your site -- a sign of a quality site).
The term Google attributes to this measure of link
popularity is called "Page Rank." The PageRank of any Web
page can be determined by installing the Google toolbar at...
http://toolbar.google.com/
... and visiting any sites in question.
A couple of caveats regarding Google and PageRank -- if you
immerse yourself in the discussions at any Webmaster forum,
you'll find discussions can get pretty complicated, pretty
quickly. So here are a few things to remember...
a) PageRank/link popularity is only one of the criteria
Google uses to rank and position sites. Although you'll
need to establish a PageRank score of between 3-5 for
Google to take real interest in listing your site, don't
become a slave to it.
b) More is not necessarily merrier. A few quality links
from the authorities on your site's topic (i.e., mini-hubs),
plus a listing in a major directory or two, plus a few
*high-value* links from *quality* sites of a similar or
related theme (watch for our soon-to-be released VALUE
EXCHANGE, also part of SBI!) will give you all the link
popularity you need. At this point, you're better off
devoting your efforts to building the sort of site people
will link to without being asked... instead of searching for
more links.
c) What those links say about your site (i.e., the link
text itself) is very important. For example, if your site's
most important keyword is...
"low cost accounting software"
... then optimally, you'd want your in-pointing links to
contain that keyword phrase -- or at least be near it (or
others).
Bottom line on Google?
Plenty of optimized, quality-rich pages, coupled with a few
high quality in-pointing links (optimally containing your
most important keywords), and you're good to go with Google!
-----SIDEBAR-----
Of course, SBI!'s SE HQ reports on how all
your pages rank on Google, as well as
tracking spider visits, and monitoring
listing status. It even tells you which
keywords are finding each of your pages,
giving you a great grasp on how you're doing
and why. And it does this automatically...
... without any input from you.
What if one of your pages is not doing well?
Just use our special Analyze It! module to
optimize your page so it ranks high. :-)
http://buildit.sitesell.com/
-----SIDEBAR-----
2) Inktomi
At this point, Inktomi is the only other search service that
drives traffic on a significant basis. Remember, nobody
goes to Inktomi *itself* to perform a keyword search.
Inktomi provides the crawler technology that powers several
SEs -- MSN being the major one of note.
Inktomi has a paid inclusion program available through...
http://www.positiontech.com/
... and up until a few months ago, it seemed like the only
sure way to get into Inktomi was to pay to have your site
listed. Sure, Inktomi was still adding sites for free, but
they were taking their own sweet time doing so.
Of course, when you vastly limit the free sites that you add
to your database, you run into big trouble -- you cannot
deliver the breadth and quality of results that an engine
like Google can (since there is no paid program in place at
Google). In late 2002, Inktomi announced they would be
significantly increasing the size of their database to
better compete with SEs like Google.
And we here at SiteSell have recently found a way to
automate a *free* submission of all pages to Inktomi, using
SBI!'s WorldSubmitter. And yes... it's getting into their
main database. Many SBI! users are reporting a pleasant
surprise to see many pages suddenly being added to the
Inktomi database -- pages that they hadn't paid to list.
(This was an non-announced feature improvement. If you're
an SBI! user, now you know why!)
So what should you be concerned about in order to do well
with Inktomi? Like Google, plenty of quality, optimized
content wins the day. Also, like Google, a couple of high
quality links should be on your "top priority" list.
Inktomi's crawler also performs regular crawls of the Web,
and if it finds your site via a quality link, it is more
likely to add it to the database and rank it a bit higher...
free! :-)
3) AltaVista, AllTheWeb, Lycos, AskJeeves (Teoma)
To do well at these four SEs, just follow the basic rules of
good SE optimization outlined above. While all four of
these engines together won't drive traffic on the scale of
MSN or Google, don't forget them. Why?
Ah-h.... I feel like a grandfather for being around for six
years of Net marketing at this point. It feels like 60 in
human years. ;-)
But this experience brings some perspective. Just a few
short years ago, AltaVista was as successful as Google. But
SEs seem to play on a slippery slope. So...
The fate of SEs rise and fall like the tide. You never
know when today's "has-been" become tomorrow's rising star.
So stay on top of all of them (with SBI!, it's as easy to
"win" at all of them as it is to master one).
---------------
The Directories
---------------
1) Yahoo!
Since Google provides the default listings for Yahoo! at
this time, there probably isn't any point in paying for a
directory listing if you are doing well in Google (and
SBI!'s "specialty" is Google!). But there is still one
valid reason why you would wish to pay to be in Yahoo!...
Link popularity...
A link from Yahoo! is still considered one of the highest
quality, most credentializing links one can get. If you
have a new site, and you need some link popularity right
away, nothing beats a Yahoo! listing. If you have a new
site with plenty of optimized, quality-rich pages, this link
may be the key to "cashing in" on the traffic of the Google
network ASAP!
And one last comment to think about... Yahoo! has recently
purchased Inktomi, the crawler-based service mentioned
earlier, and it is very conceivable that the unique
relationship between Google and Yahoo! has numbered days.
2) LookSmart
If you're paying more than $0.15 a click-through at Overture
for your most important keywords, consider LookSmart to be
your pay-per-click bargain and directory listing.
Otherwise, look elsewhere for both!
Yes, LookSmart operates on a pay-per-click basis now, with a
$94 start-up fee required (a $49 set up fee, and $45 minimum
account deposit). Minimum monthly charge is set at $15.
Initially, this might sound like a cheaper alternative to
Yahoo!'s $299 listing fee, but trust me... it ain't! :-)
Unless your site's subject matter is extremely esoteric,
you'll find your minimum monthly allotment of clicks used up
in a few days, at which point LookSmart suspends your
account -- either until the start of the next billing
period, or until you top up your account.
Paul Crane, SBI!'s Product Manager, had his listings for
ultimatefatburner.com suspended within 3 days (making it
unlikely any crawler would ever find his site and attribute
additional link popularity to it -- unless, of course, Paul
was willing to top up his account with $100).
Bottom line?
If your LookSmart is really going to accomplish anything for
you, it really has to be active 24/7. And that, my friend,
is going to cost you a ton of money! If your site is
earning you in excess of $0.15 per visitor, by all means
investigate LookSmart. Otherwise...
You will LookDumb!
But wait!
You can get in through the backdoor like my daughter, Nori,
did with her Anguilla Beaches SBI! site...
http://www.anguilla-beaches.com/
Get listed in Zeal, the non-commercial element of the
LookSmart directory...
http://www.zeal.com/
Build 10-20 pages of good content (without *any* commercial
content), and proceed through the process of listing your
site in Zeal. A full and detailed description of the
process can be found in the Tips 'n Techniques HQ in Site
Central.
Go ahead and try it. Go to...
http://www.looksmart.com/
... and search for "anguilla beaches"
And you'll find Nori at other portals powered by LookSmart.
Her Keyword Reports attest to the power of this strategy.
Seriously... it's a no-brainer. It will bring you traffic,
link popularity, and save you hundreds, even thousands of
dollars in the long run.
3) Open Directory Project
Since the Open Directory remains free, it is your official
directory no-brainer. Since it is maintained by
volunteers, it may take months to get listed, depending on
the popularity of the category to which you submit.
Although "ODP" won't drive a ton of traffic to your site
(even though they provide back-up listings for Google, AOL,
Netscape and many others), don't underestimate its
importance...
A DMOZ listing has great "credentializing" power, and is
worthwhile listing for that very reason!
You may get lucky and get listed immediately. But in
general, it will take 4-6 months. Nori submitted back in
October and guess what?
I checked last week. And she's in!
Go to...
http://www.dmoz.org/
... and search for "anguilla beaches."
Yahoo! Err, I mean...
ODP!
(Geez, doesn't sound the same, does it?)
Since the time anguilla-beaches.com has been listed in the
ODP, I've been surprised at the traffic. SBI!'s Directory
HQ reports significantly more traffic than from LookSmart
(It's roughly a 5:1 ratio, but still less than Yahoo!.
Thanks to Google and how well she does with it -- Nori has
not paid for a listing at Yahoo!.)
Ah-h... the new Directory HQ... Nori (and I) love it! It's
like a window into the world of directories. Unique and
powerful insights. :-)
-----SIDEBAR-----
The new Directory HQ makes managing and
tracking the effectiveness of any Directory
listing a snap -- OK, OK, a click! :-)
Want to ensure LookSmart is delivering as
reported? Paying $299 for a Yahoo! listing,
and undecided whether to renew the service
again next year?
The Directory HQ reveals *all*!
-----SIDEBAR-----
One more pointer on ODP...
http://www.resource-zone.com/
This is the Open Directory's forum, and a great place to
receive listing tips directly from the editors themselves!
-----
So what's the bottom line on driving plenty of targeted
traffic *without* blowing a huge budget?
Actually, there are several...
o Build your site on a Foundation of Plenty -- lots and
lots of quality content.
o Develop a list of well-researched keywords showing high
demand and little supply.
-----SIDEBAR-----
Here's where the SBI! Manager really shines!
Enter your keywords, click a button, and let
the Manager's Brainstorming process isolate
hundreds of keyword phrases with the optimal
blend of supply vs. demand.
http://buildit.sitesell.com/
-----SIDEBAR-----
o Obtain a handful of high quality, credentializing links
from authorities in your theme, and from at least one of
the major directories.
-----SIDEBAR-----
SiteSell's upcoming Value Exchange will be
the first bona fide comprehensive linking
solution on the Net. Stay tuned.
-----SIDEBAR-----
o Use SBI!'s powerful SEO strategies/Analyze It! tool.
o Use SBI!'s unique SE and Directory HQ functionality to
monitor and track your listings (and in the case of the SE
HQ, have them submitted and resubmitted automatically,
according to each SE's tolerances)...
http://buildit.sitesell.com
o Always play fair (easy to do if you use SBI!, we've built
fairness right into our tool!). Tricks are, by very
definition, deceptive. At this point, the SEs have seen it
all. Don't risk having your domain banned by the SEs!
-----SIDEBAR-----
If you read advice about tricking the
engines... run... don't walk, in the
opposite direction.
-----SIDEBAR-----
Bottom line?
Concentrate on the "Give then Take" philosophy...
*Give*, as in provide the SEs and Directories (and your human
visitors, too!) with quality content that accurately
fulfills the needs of what their customers (searchers) seek.
*Take,* in the form of plenty of focused traffic.
How can I be so sure? It's the SBI! approach, and thousands
of sites have proven its success. Please examine this
study...
Please bookmark this page -- it's the only page that you
will EVER need to buy SiteSell products at an owners-only
discount. For owners of SiteSell products ONLY, it provides
discounts on all products, except for MYSS! 2002 -- if I
reduced the price on it, I'd have to pay *you* to buy it!
