Montreal 2004 SiteSell Seminar Broke Fire Codes...

We held our first-ever offline seminar on March 31 in
Montreal, Canada. And how'd it go, you ask?
Let's just say that we broke every fire code in the book.
We had planned for 150 to attend, had made contingencies
(i.e., extra chairs and coffee ready!) for 200...
... and rushed in a total of an extra 100 chairs because
over 300 attended! Folks were sitting in the registration
room, just off the main hall, we were so packed. They sat
on the floor in the aisle and they stood along the walls.
It was a blast. And extremely educational. I was surprised
how much information one can impart at a seminar, and how
effectively people can "get it." Even SBI! owners who
attended understood points they had missed.
Customer surveys were outrageously positive.
So... we're doing it again, different city this time.

Since we had let affiliates and customers know about it
through our zines, folks drove in from all over the
NorthEast U.S. and Canada. (We also did a local offline
radio and newspaper marketing blitz, in order to test
effectiveness of offline media for an event such as this
one.)
Rather than tell you more about how the night unfolded, I'll
leave it to Bill Nash, who flew several thousand miles just
for this (although he did get to enjoy Montreal's legendary
night life, too, for the weekend). He gives a faithful

What Scares Me About Launching E-com?
Please Remember... C-T-P Before M
I recently announced that Site Build It! would be launching
the world's best shopping cart shortly. A note from
successful SBIer (hey, is there any other kind?), Marc Liron
from the U.K., got me thinking...

I am just back from a week in Seattle with
Microsoft! What an amazing time that was....
thanks SBI for making that possible!
Whilst at the Microsoft MVP Summit I got
talking with some of the leading lights in
the Windows XP online community... I got
around to asking about their website traffic
and all bar one had less than me!!! AND they
have been going a lot longer and are more
"established".
Microsoft are also impressed and are going to
feature my site soon in the Windows XP zone
at www.microsoft.com. Now that's the power of
SBI for you!

Marc has gone from an ex-sailor to a Microsoft MVP, and a
star MVP at that, thanks to SBI!. No, actually, I've
phrased that rather badly....
Marc has succeeded thanks to HIS brain and motivation. In
other words, he supplied the ingredients SBI! needs...
BAM! (Brain and Motivation)
No way around it. Anyone with an ounce of common sense
knows that it takes some good old-fashioned elbow grease to
build a REAL business. We're not "playing business" here.
NOW that Marc has the PREsold traffic (i.e., he has done
C-T-P), how does he MONETIZE it? Easy....
1) He sells his Webmaster services. He refuses new clients
because he's just too busy.
2) He sells an e-book, using a "digital delivery resource"
recommended in the SBI! E-com Resources HQ. (We don't make
a penny for these cream-of-the-crop picks. We focus ONLY on
helping SBIers succeed.)
3) He runs some Google ads, an affiliate link or two, etc.
The key point? Monetization is easy AFTER you have built
traffic successfully through CTP.
The next key point? Marc has no shopping cart. So many
people think "e-commerce = shopping cart." It's not.
E-commerce is merely about doing business, profitably, on
the Internet. Simple.
So while our shopping cart is obviously a major launch, I
don't want to overshadow the C-T-P. If you don't do
"Content," which builds "Traffic," and which you then
"PREsell" by OVERdelivering what visitors seek (solid
information), you'll never have any PREsold customers to
sell.
So...
What Scares Me About Launching E-com?
I'd hate to shift attention onto the "M" before people
nail down the C-T-P. Please, please remember...
C-T-P. Then develop M... and not just a shopping cart.
Once you have PREsold traffic, build a BUSINESS -- and
that means develop a mix of "Monetization" models.

"C-T-P sounds like it takes so much time.
What if I don't have as much time as Marc?"
PATIENCE is more important than "time." Because "CTP" is
not "Get Rich Quick". You won't put up a cookie-cutter site
with thousands of visitors TOMORROW. THOSE deals are all
fake.
If you have the patience, you don't need much time...
Marc only does this part-time. Yes, and he's already one of
the most visited Microsoft MVPs on the Web. He's beating
full-time pros who have been doing this for years!
Let's say you only have time to do ONE PAGE PER WEEK.
Ah... there's my cue to bring up my daughter, Nori. :-)
Nori only has an hour or two per week. Even if YOU only
have this much time, you can still build a site like my
daughter has...

How does Nori monetize? Easy...
1) Referrals to local businesses -- she has made thousands
of dollars from her referrals to a wonderful local real
estate agent. Now she's added this one...

will likely take her a full year to build out slowly)...

it's a pain not violating Google's secrecy clause.)
3) Affiliate links -- Modest income from Amazon/Barnes,

And she has also joined Priceline. She's added a link to
Priceline on her "Getting There" page...

4) Anguilla Art store -- And this brings me back to our
shopping cart. Nori will be one of our first SBI! Web
stores. She will sell sculptures, paintings and other
artwork from the top artisans on the island (who are truly
talented but not Net-savvy). They will drop-ship from
Anguilla as Nori sends the orders and money.
Of course, you can also "do retail" the conventional way and
take stock into inventory, pick-pack-and-ship, and so forth.
But with Nori's time limitations, she looks for
time-efficient monetization models.

Nori has become a mini-celebrity in Anguilla,
recognized by tourists, shopkeepers,
restaurant owners during our March/2004
vacation. It was all I could do to keep her
head from swelling and floating away. ;-)
I say this not to brag about my daughter
(well, maybe a little!), but rather to get
you thinking of Nori and Anguilla as a
metaphor. Every body of knowledge is "an
island." Mark Liron is an expert in the
"island of XP." Others know a lot about RC
cars. Whatever YOU know about, you can
build YOUR "brand of one" by apply C-T-P...

It's trite to say, but once you have the traffic,
monetization is limited only by your imagination. Heck,
Nori could even take a digital camcorder down to Anguilla
and create a terrific DVD of the island. At $2-$3
production costs, she could sell at least a few per day and
let a local fulfillment house take care of shipping.
Like I said... monetization is limited only by your
imagination. Right now, "monetization focus" will shift to
the shopping cart as we get ready to launch the world's best
shopping cart. Once our final two rounds of testing are
done, watch for the announcement that E-com is here, which
will end the "Buy-1-Get-1-Ecom-Free" deal...
