Google AdSense ad units. Here's how it works...
Amazon links pay a pittance (more on this below). So the
Anguilla Bookstore...
1) renamed itself to "The Best Anguilla Books"
2) dropped the Amazon links

3) integrated Google AdSense -- notice how the context
sensitive Google ads are largely for bookstores and how she
placed the ad units in strategic spots to get the click...

Not only have I seen Amazon and Indigo (Canada's largest
bookstore) advertise there, so too do eBay and other
online bookstores. Heck, Nori is probably making more
from Amazon now than she was before as an affiliate.
What a hoot! AdSense is going to force unfair programs like
Amazon's to shape up. Amazon should make their program fair
-- the cost would still be the lowest "cost of acquisition"
of any other marketing method that they employ.
What do they need to do to compete with Google AdSense
for *YOUR* site's profitable attention? Here...
1) Leave cookies valid indefinitely. Why should we be
penalized if that person buys in 2 months? If a visitor
buys after a referral, that should be good enough.
2) Pay a bigger commission for that first-time customer,
since they don't pay any automatic commissions for repeat
purchases from that lifetime customer. Their cost of
acquisition of a new customer is absurdly low.
3) Simplify and quit structuring a program that is almost
guaranteed to either NOT pay you a commission for a referral
or if it does, pay you the lowest amount possible.
