Keep Your Computer Safe and Secure
Be proactive when it comes to computer security. Review the
following checklist for additional pointers...

1) Use a firewall to protect your computer from intruders.
----------------------------------------------------------
A router (used to ceate a computer network in a home or
office) can act as a physical firewall, since it can hide
your IP address from prying eyes. Learn how to turn this
firewall on.
If you use a wireless router, you'll need added security
since any computer with a wireless connection in a nearby
house could access your network, visit your computer, and
steal vital information. At the very least, your wireless
network should require a password to log in. (See below
about storing usernames and passwords.)
Firewall software will also help prevent unauthorized access
to your computer. ZoneAlarm is a good one. Microsoft also
offers one to registered owners of Windows OS software...

2) Install, and keep updated, reputable virus scanner and
trojan hunter applications.

A trojan is a small bit of code placed inside an application
or file that is downloaded to a computer's hard drive. Once
the file is opened, the malicious code embeds itself in the
computer system, usually in the operating system (OS). Since
virus scanners don't usually check the OS, they can miss a
trojan located there. A trojan hunter will find it.
Set up your virus scanner to scan all your downloads and
e-mails, especially those with attachments. Also run a virus
scan on any floppy disk or USB memory stick that someone
gives you.

3) Never open attachments from people you don't know.
-----------------------------------------------------
As an added precaution, don't open ones from people you do
know until you check with them that they did indeed send you
an attachment. Then virus scan it before you open it.

4) Use passwords that are at least 8 characters long.
-----------------------------------------------------
Use upper case and lower case letters, numbers and special
characters. An 8 character alphanumeric password (just upper
and lower case letters plus numbers) will have over one
trillion possible combinations. That will slow down any
hacker trying to break into your account.
Also, change your passwords regularly -- at least every
three months. And don't write your login information on a
sticky and attach it to your monitor. Anyone visiting your
home could write down that information and access your
account.
As added protection, keep all your usernames and passwords
in a text file. Copy and paste them into their associated
login fields, instead of typing them in. This prevents
keylogger code from logging the keystrokes you use to enter
the username and password.
For even greater protection of your passwords, open source
(free) Password Safe is available to Windows users. It
allows you to store your vital login information in a secure
file that will only open with a password (so you only have
to remember one password). You can also generate passwords
up to 1,000 characters long. Simply copy and paste the
password into the login field and access your SBI!, AdSense
or other account.

5) Many usernames and passwords arrive by e-mail. Regularly
archive your e-mail and then delete them from your inbox or
other e-mail folders.

Outlook also has a feature that lets you encrypt your
folders. If you do this, you'll have one more password to
store or remember.

6) Keyloggers and other spyware can learn all sorts of things
about you that you don't want people to know. Use a
reputable anti-adware/anti-spyware application on a regular
basis (some people recommend using one daily) to ensure that
you haven't picked up adware or spyware.

Special note to Mac users: PCs running Windows applications
tend to have more seurity concerns. But the rising
popularity of Macs means that more and more viruses and
other malware will appear over the next few years. And with
the ability now to run Windows applications on your Mac, you
risk all the Windows-related security issues discussed above
if you don't take precautions.
Don't be complacent about your Mac's security. Use OS X's
built-in firewall (System Preferences > Sharing) or purchase
a firewall application. Use a virus scanner. And change and
protect your passwords.

Your most important defense is awareness.
Don't be one of the many who think "it can't happen to me."
It can, and it will, if you don't take precautions.
