Your long-term online reputation begins the moment a visitor
arrives at your site.  Take some time to do an objective
review of your site. Are you doing the best you can to
please your visitors and establish credibility? 

Convert apprehensive visitors into trusting raving fans by
paying close attention to the following advice...

Design Elements

Visitors form an instant impression about your site, before
they read any of the content.  An attractive L&F (Look &
Feel) that relates to your theme, and fits visitors'
expectations, builds confidence.  A business site, for
example, will be different from an art site in its use of
color, images, layout, etc.

Voice

The first few sentences on a page can make or break your
relationship with your visitors.  The overall "voice" behind
your site will either express competence and build trust, or
create doubt in your visitor's mind.

To boost your site's credibility, create content that is...

o  accurate
o  authoritative
o  objective
o  current
o  comprehensive
o  authentic
o  well organized.

Keep the above qualities in mind when building your
auxiliary pages (i.e., auto-responders, thank you pages, and
e-zines), and any time you are representing your site online
(i.e., niche-related forum posts).

Use casual, conversational language throughout your
content.  Your visitors will relate to you on a more personal
level if you speak to them as you would a friend.

Limit use of outside content (i.e., from article
directories).  When you do publish someone else's words, make
sure their voice fits with what your visitors expect from
your site.

Provide a contact form and encourage questions and
suggestions from your visitors.  They will use it, and when
they do...

Ask for only what you need to know on forms.  Assure your
visitors that you value their trust and will never share
their e-mail address or other personal details, for any
reason.

A testimonial is a powerful trust-building tool.  When
visitors send comments about how your content has helped
them, post their words prominently on your site.

Of course, ask permission first!  Whether it's a testimonial,
or a comment from an e-mail, it's good Net etiquette to get
your visitor's approval before you use his or her words.

Include visitor questions in blog entries.  Many times when a
visitor contacts you asking a question, the answer would
benefit other visitors to your site.  Post the question and
your response in your blog (excluding personal details).

purposes.  It adds another valuable content page to your
site, and it solidifies your "expert" reputation.

that you are passionate about your business.  Fresh and
current information enhances your site's perceived value.

flashing banners, which only serve to annoy surfers.
