Add an AddThis Widget to Your Site
Every day, people add thousands of Web pages to their
social bookmarking system (StumbleUpon, del.icio.us, Furl,
etc.). You can make it simple for them to do this by placing
an AddThis widget on each page of your site.
To get your AddThis widget, go to http://www.AddThis.com.
Sign up for an account by clicking on My Account in the top
right corner.
Logged in? Good. It's time to create your widget and get
your code.
Return to the home page and click on GET THE WIDGET.
Select the second button. If you want to use the regular
widget instead of the drop down widget, you can select any
of the other buttons. Unfortunately, at this time, the second
button is the only one used with the drop down widget.
Click on Get your free button >>.
Click inside the second text box. The code will highlight.
Copy the code (Ctrl-C; Command-C on a Mac).
Paste the code into a new text document (Notepad/TextEdit)
and save it as AddThis.txt.
Every time you want to add the widget to a page on your
site, copy the code from the text file and paste it into your
page code.
Where do you put the button? Some people put it at the
top of the page, where it's easy to notice. Others place it at
the bottom of each page, where the content ends, as a
reminder to bookmark the page.
You may want to do some "split-testing" to see which works
best for you. Place the button at the top of your pages for a
few weeks. Note how many people visited, then move the
button to the bottom for a few more weeks. Then compare
the current stats at AddThis with those for the top placement.
Use the location that gives the best numbers.
