A Blog vs. a Theme-Based Content Site
Blogging has reached lemming status. Without even thinking,
many small businesses equate blogging with having a Web
site. This is obviously wrong for small businesses with
something to sell (ex., services, e-book sellers, etc.).
But it's also the wrong choice for infopreneurs (ex., those
who earn affiliate and AdSense income, without selling
anything directly to customers).
I challenge you to truly think about these questions...
o How and why has blogging reached "lemming epidemic"
status?
o How do bloggers actually do FINANCIALLY, where it counts?
o Should YOU blog? When?
o How do blogs compare to Theme-Based Content Sites,
performance-wise in the short- and long-terms?
o Where did the misleading promise of blogging come from?
Why do folks buy into it, despite all the evidence of
failure?

The Unifying Theory of Search Engine Results
Can you over-optimize a page? Here's the long answer to a
very interesting short question...
On-page factors used to be EVERYTHING. Those were fun days.
It was a game, since it was totally controllable. It was
possible to manipulate the engines. Get the "formula" right
and you win the brass ring!
Formulas and tricks, however, gave way to "keep it real."
It's so much easier to just give BOTH humans and engines
what they want... useful, original and real content. On the
other hand, it became so much harder to manipulate Google
that SEO became basically dead (at least, in the traditional
"engine manipulation" definition of that term -- SEOers will
progressively redefine that term until they basically show
clients how to "keep it real").
Then Google announced recently that they added 200 factors
to their algorithm AFTER their founders developed Page Rank.
So now, more than ever, you really need to understand the
importance of OFF-PAGE factors (i.e., how humans respond to
your site before, during, and after they visit your site).
These factors are way beyond simply a Google Page Rank.
Tracking all those human reactions has been the main way
that Google's algorithm gets smarter.
In the future, the ultimate direction is Artificial
Intelligence. In other words, Google wants to read a page,
an entire site, and it wants to "get it" the way that humans
do. That's still years away, so for now Google tracks human
reaction as a reasonable way to approximate how good and
relevant a page is for each possible search.
You can see that SEO (engine manipulation) ultimately is
unworkable. The good news is that you don't need to
"optimize" in the sense of making rankings happen, since the
on-page part of the overall algorithm is less and less
important.
If Google detected many positive off-page criteria for
keyword "vacuum cleaners" (as an example) for that page or
if it merely detected "good off-page" for "vacuum cleaner
reviews," "vacuum cleaners" could indeed rank in Search
Results for that word, especially because the root of
"vacuum cleaners" does appear within "vacuum cleaner
reviews."
If you think about all this, it explains the long tail
phenomenon. SEOers talk about long tail keywords now, long
after we did. But they talk about researching them and
working to make all this happen (that is the key driver of
SEO, making it happen). But by keeping it real, it just
happens. Create a great site full of real content and your
reputation goes up and up and up with Google (due to all the
OFF-PAGE analysis it does, tracking human response).
Take-Home Lesson?
The power of the off-page. It's nearly impossible to
"over-optimize" by accident (i.e., when you are simply
writing naturally, and not trying to manipulate the
engines). The engines are smarter than that.
