The RSS Process
There are 3 steps to becoming an RSS publisher...
1. Publisher creates new content. This can be job vacancies, new
listings of cars for sale, rental apartment listings, software
reviews, or opinion pieces, to list a few more types of content
found in RSS feeds.
2. Publisher updates RSS feed. The feed is a specially formatted
file that contains the Title, a short Description (or the full content),
and a Link to the Web page where the content is located.
3. Visitor visits publisher's site and subscribes to RSS feed.
Visitor receives updates in RSS reader whenever new content is
published. The most important part for the publisher is the link back
to the Web page. Every person who subscribes to the feed is a
"warm" prospect who is already PREsold on the content of that site
(otherwise, no subscription). Links in the RSS feed let those visitors
return to the site, where the publisher has another opportunity to
monetize.
So What's the Point?
Users (content-consumers) get information to come to them.
Marketers/publishers attract readers to their Web sites for more
information (ex., the full article or Web page, or a product update, or
a new blog posting) whenever a headline/summary in an RSS feed
strikes their interest.
The beauty, for both "content consumer" and "content producer," is that
RSS allows consumers to see some of the producer's content without
needing to visit the site. That allows the consumer to scan efficiently.
When a headline and summary appeal to consumers, they click to visit the
site for the full article. And that is a visit that the content producer
very likely would not have had, since the consumer may not otherwise have
known about his/her content.
Compare that with your own use of bookmarks or favorites. How often do
you go through your list of bookmarks, visiting each site you've added?
It's the same for every other Web user.
Bottom line?
You (as the publisher) give up control to gain control.
Your site improves its visibility and reach, simply by being more
available, more conveniently. You give up control over visitor
behavior to gain more control over a growing business.
Need a bonus?...
In much the same way other sites provide links to those with quality
content, other sites will be happy to publish your excellent RSS feed on
their sites. It provides a service to their visitors and is a "lazy man's"
way to provide content.
You may even occasionally do the same, not as a way to avoid the work
of creating your own content, but for truly excellent and non-competing
content (much the same way you may provide a link out to a quality
site now).
The benefits of publishing the work of others on your site are less clear.
At most, use the same basic philosophy that you would use when providing
a link to a non-competing, theme-related site -- do it if it fits your
visitor's needs and truly adds to your site.
RSS is an important part of Content > Traffic > PPREsell > Monetize.
You'll reach folks who might be too afraid to subscribe to an e-zine. No
need for "the worriers" to give you their e-mail address -- they can
remain anonymous and spam-free! That means that you'll reach a bigger
"repeat audience" than with e-zines only.
RSS's strongest role is as a powerful PREseller -- nothing beats repeat
exposure of excellent, free content. Of course, it also does build traffic
(as we've seen, both directly by subscribing to your RSS feed and through
other sites publishing your feed).
And the best news? RSS feeds can even be used to monetize. You can put
affiliate links in your feed. And if you have an AdSense account, you can
burn your feed through AdSense for Feeds and have ads display whenever
someone views your content in their RSS reader.
