into a "traffic cop" for a multi-product site. At the same
time, we made another overhaul...
Our good old MYSS! site has been revamped. I'm amazed that
it continued to sell as well as it did, for as long as it
did. It was certainly looking a little "long in the tooth"
lately. But it served us admirably.

You're About to See a Revolution on the Net...
And You Heard it Here First!
We're at the beginning of the Digital Revolution. The last
revolution was the Industrial Revolution. Before that, we
made the huge leap from Hunter-Gatherers into the
Agricultural Revolution.
Each revolution, of course, totally changed the way we
lived, ate, slept, worked and played. Before the Industrial
Revolution, things were far less centralized.
A far greater percentage of the population farmed. Cities
were relatively much smaller. Markets were small and local.
Goods were priced by haggling and through a very low-tech
kind of "exchange" process...
Vendors could see competing vendors' prices for potatoes and
balance that against buyer demand, and constantly adjust
their prices accordingly...
... a very raw, low-tech kind of dynamic pricing.
Then, around 500 years ago, the Industrial Revolution
started... slowly at first. It really picked up steam at
the turn of the last century. Mass manufacturing. Mass
marketing...
And so static pricing was born. Want that shirt? Wal-Mart
sells it for $29.99. Same price in Los Angeles as in New
York. It might be a slightly different price at Sears --
but it would be the same price at every store in each chain,
from Miami to Montreal. And it would be the same price
tomorrow and the next week (except for the occasional sale
at a new static price).
Mass marketing simply does not allow for any kind of dynamic
pricing. Static pricing *WAS* the perfect solution for a
mass-marketing society.
The Internet will change all that.
Already, shopping bots roam the Net, constantly looking for
the lowest prices. Communication is instantaneous and free
-- we can all talk with each other. Supply and demand ebbs
and flows... more importantly, it can be measured in
real-time.
Already, we see signs of dynamic pricing...
o Group buying sites like mercata.com put pressure on
prices.
o More and more B2B (business to business) sites are using
a variety of auction formats (ex. Dutch auctions, reverse
auctions) and exchanges to price products.
and
o C2C (consumer to consumer) sites like eBay use auctions
to create amazing, rich technicolor marketplaces.
So far, though, in straight one-on-one, customer-vendor,
transaction-based sites, static pricing still rules. Yes,
companies like Priceline.com break that rule -- customers
can "name their own price." But Priceline is the exception
that proves the static pricing global rule.
Not for long...
Static pricing worked because it was simply the most
efficient way to handle matters, given the technology at the
time. Imagine Wal-mart haggling over the price of every
single item sold. Imagine CONSTANTLY balancing supply and
demand for their millions of items in stock. No way.
A far more efficient way to sell, for both merchant and
vendor, is through dynamic pricing. With dynamic pricing,
the price fluctuates according to supply and demand.
The price of a product becomes more like the price of a
stock on a stock exchange... ADJUSTING constantly, a perfect
reflection of market conditions at any given moment.
The result? Well, the MYPS! Pricing Manual has a great

The successful producer of an article sells
it for more than it cost him to make, and
that's his profit. But the customer buys it
only because it is worth more to him than he
pays for it, and that's his profit. No one
can long make a profit producing anything
unless the customer makes a profit using it.

With dynamic pricing, the customer buys at a price that
balances his cost with his profit. And the merchant extends
his market by capturing buyers who would never purchase at a
"too-high," static price, yet will also sell at higher
prices to less price-sensitive customers. Both parties WIN
and maximize profits.
There's no doubting the power of dynamic pricing. It will
replace static pricing at transaction-based sites within
five years. Static pricers will suffer against competitors
who price dynamically. Only one question remains...
"HOW???"
That's the rub -- a conceptual breakthrough was needed, as
well as technical execution. You'll see how shortly...

sell (a feasibility study can save a lot of grief), on the
