preponderance of filtering software used to stem the flow of
spam on the Net. The problem, as we all know, is that
oftentimes the filters are a little too diligent in their
duties, culling the good along with the bad (that's why we

to your growing business, gets trashed by your ISP or mail

Which Type Of Person Are You?
I'm Convinced It's The Difference Between Success And Failure
As you know, we deal with tens of thousands of people every
day -- through our Web site, e-mail Masters Courses,
e-books, and our flagship product, Site Build It!. We get
hundreds of e-mails per day. I also meet with our Support
staff once a week to review a wide variety of issues that
occurred during the past seven days, both good and bad.
Without realizing it, a question had been slowly brewing,
forming, whirling, taking shape...
"Why do some people succeed? And only *some*?"
So many different people, doing many different things. Yet
clearly some people were succeeding, others seemed destined
to succeed, and still others left me feeling helpless for
them.
"Why?," I asked myself.
And then it crystallized in my mind...
... all because of my very first product that I ever sold on
the Net... PennyGold.
What's the connection?
To make a long story short, I sold 1,000 copies of this
investment software (my own creation based on my own
observations) at a high price and then stopped. PennyGold
really works. It's ruthless, actually.
We turn down offers to buy a copy of PennyGold every day
(the site remains up to serve as an example in MYSS! 2002,
but we clearly say that the product is no longer for sale).
"Please, just one more copy, who would know?"
I would! After all..
We promised users that we'd stop at 1,000 because PennyGold
would stop working if too many people used it.
So what does this have to do with my thought-burst about
success? Well...
Every now and then I hear from a PennyGold owner, Stephen
Hardy (hardycheung@yahoo.com). He writes just to tell me
how well he's doing with PennyGold, and usually with a brief
update about his family, and how life is going. It always
leaves me feeling great, knowing that something from my
brain has impacted positively on someone else's life.

Now, please understand. PennyGold is not easy to use. But
it's not hard either.
The concept is simple. But it takes *work* to gather the
data.
On the other hand, once you have the data, you don't need an
MBA to make the right choice. Just follow the rules.
I only hear from Stephen once or twice a year. The rest of
the time, he just quietly chugs away at PennyGold...
... *doing* it.
And... when I check the log files, I see the same steady
core of users who log in and use it. I hear from a few of
them, like Stephen, always with good news... always with the
same kind of comments... "I just follow the rules."
The key? They just **do it.**
Which reminds me of something that 5 Pillar Affiliate Chip
Tarver (chipt@lock-net.com) from Tennessee, includes in his

And once you *start* doing it, *keep* doing it...
Stephen didn't give up because there was a learning curve.
He understands that there's no such thing as an easy
"on-the-house" lunch.
He didn't quit when one of his stocks went bust (as I'm sure
must have happened -- nothing is 100%). The very nature of
life is that there will always be setbacks. Overcome them.
He doesn't waste time talking, talking, talking. He realizes
that chatter and talking about it do not get it done.
He just *does* it.
And then he *keeps* doing it.
This brings me to my most favorite quote in the world...

Building a business is not easy (not even with Site Build
It!... at the end of the day, SBI! is just a powerful system
of tools -- you still have to *use* it, *do* it). If
business-building were easy, we'd all be Bill Gates.
So count on the following...
There will be times when you're ready to pack it in, to give
up. Perseverance gets you over that hump, past that barrier
to success.
The good news? If you persevere, it almost guarantees your
success. Because so few people *persist,* you can *insist*
on success. I love to hear the stories of success -- and we
see so many every day. They move us profoundly.
But I feel like shaking those who blame anything or anyone
but themselves, who give up, who whine or complain, who
talk, talk, talk. Sorry for being harsh here, but I can't
begin to emphasize how important this is.
Maybe some folks would be better off recognizing themselves
and working a 9 to 5, with watching the tube being the only
night-time scheduled activity. They'd be happier, at least.
But please realize...
Success does lie within you. You *can* use the Net to
either grow an existing business (whether that business is
online or off) or to start a totally new one.
We see it happen, every day. Thousands and thousands of
people simply *do it*...
They don't have IQs of 150.
They are not extraordinary visionaries.
They are just regular people. Except...
They *insist* on success. If you *insist*...
"Doing it" *is* so "DO-able." Just start... and don't stop
until you are there.

OK, ready to do whatever it takes?
Let's start 2003 with a series of tips that you can use to
increase the likelihood of "getting there"...

Action Step #1 -- Cut The Fat
-----------------------------
Make a concerted effort to sell or promote products or
services that are in direct correlation with your site's
theme, and that will meet the needs of the majority of
visitors to your Web site. Unrelated products, or products
that don't perform well, are robbing you of both time *and*
money.
Online, making assumptions of any kind is a big mistake...
"Hey, what gives? Why wouldn't visitors to my e-book review
site be interested in cheap long distance packages?"
... but one that is easy to overcome.
Look carefully at the keywords that found your site. They
are the closest thing you'll get to a window into your
visitor's mind -- his or her mindset. Your offers must
"mirror" this mindset as close as possible if you intend to
be successful.

While it's arguable that anybody would be
interested in cheap long distance rates, it's
only when a surfer enters a "long distance"
related keyword phrase at a Search Engine
that she is concretely expressing her
interest. And that's a big difference.

So get rid of everything that does not perform and/or does
not directly address the needs of your visitors. To build
further success, focus on what's working now!

Action Step #2 -- Investigate Joint Venture Opportunities
---------------------------------------------------------
You may assume that joint venture opportunities are limited
only to those who have their own product to sell. And while
you'll definitely want to put this one at the top of your
list for 2003, if you do have a product of your own, you
certainly do not need one to develop mutually beneficial
relationships with other like-minded Webmasters.
For those of you with products or e-goods of your own, the
simplest way to build meaningful partnerships is to
implement an affiliate program. And approach similar but
non-competing Web sites with an offer of referral-based
commissions.
Obvious, right?
But there are other mutually beneficial relationships that
can be established without a product or affiliate program.
Exchanging a link, for example, is the most elementary of
such relationships. Mutual co-promotion of each other's
sites in your e-zine is another.
This strategy can be further expanded. For instance...

Each one has free rein to reproduce any article from the
other's site (either in an e-zine, or on their respective
Web sites) as long as proper credit is allotted. Paul and
Stephen have arranged it in such a way that they don't even
have to notify each other!
Of course, this arrangement evolved over time, as the two of
them got to know and trust each other. But it's a good
example of a "Win"-"Win" situation for both. Both gain
exposure to surfers they would not normally attract, both
get extra content for their site, and both gain extra
spill-over traffic.
So don't ignore *creative use* of this strategy.

Action Step #3 -- Improve Conversion Rates
------------------------------------------
Provide any Webmaster with one wish for his/her Web site,
and, 9 times out of 10, it will be for "more traffic."
While sufficient traffic numbers are ultimately required for
any sort of real success on the Net, there is one other
factor (often overlooked, unfortunately) that is far more
important...
Conversion Rate.
The Conversion Rate, as you know, is the percentage of site
visitors that make a purchase, either directly from you, or
from a merchant partner you represent. Conversion Rates can
and will vary immensely depending several (plus) factors.
Numbers can range anywhere from a tenth of 1% (1 out of
1,000 make a purchase) all the way up to 12-15% (12-15 out
of a 100 make a purchase).
The most important factors in your control for determining
this rate are...
o the products/offers/services you offer your visitors
(i.e., how well you match your offers to the needs of your
visitors).
o how you present these offers to them (i.e., are you
offering an unbiased presentation of a product that provides
a real solution for them? Or are you offering a transparent
sales pitch in an effort to increase revenue?
By improving the Conversion Rate, you are improving the
efficiency of your Web site and increasing the value of a
visitor (which makes it viable to pay for additional
visitors -- via a Pay-Per-Click program, for instance).
Case in point...
o 1% CR = 1 sale per 100 visitors
o 2% CR = 2 sales per 100 visitors
o 3% CR = 3 sales per 100 visitors
Now that 100 visitors generate 3 sales instead of one, it's
well worth your while to focus on increasing targeted
traffic to your site.
Bottom line?
Fix your Conversion Rate first!

Action Step #4 -- Build More Traffic
------------------------------------
Because you are converting more and more visitors into
paying customers, it's time to start driving more traffic
to your Web site.
My number one recommendation?
Buy and use Site Build It!.

its **traffic-building** abilities.

if I spent a bit more time, I could make it
far sharper. But it doesn't need to be --

Action Step #5 -- Track, Track, and Track Some More!

Going hand-in-hand with traffic and Conversion Rates is the
meticulous tracking of everything you do online. Because of
the very nature of the Web, it's easy to experiment,
measure, tweak, and experiment some more -- based on the
results you gather.
No venture or advertising campaign of any kind should be
experimented with until you can measure the results
accurately. Implementing a Pay-Per-Click campaign? You'll
have a much better idea of your bid cap (the most you can
afford to pay per "click-though"), if you can determine the
level at which this traffic converts. Same must be said for
e-zine advertising -- you simply have to know what sort of
results your dollars are bringing you.
Without that, you are very much in the dark.
However, if you're using Site Build It! this is easy to do

Let's finish with my "perseverance" message...
It's pretty easy to get discouraged when things are not
going as "swimmingly" as you'd like. Just remember...
o Rome.com was not built in a day. It takes time to build
momentum, as it does to build traffic, a large subscriber
list and a stable of loyal clients.
o On the Net, there's a reason for everything. If you are
not happy with the results you are attaining, review
thoroughly...
a) Your PREselling (or selling) efforts -- Are they honest
and sincere, putting the needs of your visitors first and
foremost? Or instead, are they barely concealed sales
pitches? Your Conversion Rate is also tied closely to this.
b) Your Web site -- Is it clean and professionally
designed? Does it inspire confidence and help establish your
credibility the moment your page loads into a browser?
c) Your offers -- Are they precisely matched to the
specific needs of your unique visitor? My example earlier
(i.e., the e-book review site offering cheap long distance
rates) may have perhaps seemed a little "tongue in cheek"
but it's still not uncommon to see such mismatching on the
Net.
d) Your traffic -- Is it high quality and highly targeted
to your site's theme?
e) Your advertising -- Are you tracking your results? Are
you looking for customers in the right place? Are you
spending your dollars as wisely as you could be?
Chances are if you follow the above sub-steps to the letter,
you'll discover a few things that can be "tweaked" for the
better! :-)

ensure greater productivity and profitability in 2003.
