Articles and Content Duplication
Have you ever wondered if it is a good idea to use
ezinearticles.com for additional content on your site?
Use the following as a general rule of thumb...
Do not reproduce third party articles on your site. Google
may hold you responsible for duplicating material. Remember
the lines of responsibility -- you are held directly
responsible for what is on your site.
You are less liable to get into trouble if others ask to
reprint one of your articles on their site and you allow it.
But...
1) Make sure they have a decent Alexa ranking and Google PR
(use Search It! Popularity queries to find out)...

Or it should at least be a terrific site. (Try not to be
biased against a young-but-great site -- its Alexa ranking
and Google PR will improve eventually.)
2) Ask these other site owners to clearly label the content
as a Reprint with credit to you and your site. Google
should recognize language like that. Plus, if the other
site ever outranks you, you have something to show Google.
3) Include a link to your site (which is why you care about
#1, above).
The only reason that you should allow an article to be
published on a third party site would be to get a
good-quality in-pointing link.
Bottom line?
As always, focus on creating your own quality content.
Building a solid "unique-voice" foundation is your first
priority.
What About Duplicate Content WITHIN Your Site?
Eliminate the duplicate content.
If, for some reason, you want that duplicate content (more
than just a snippet of a page)... change it, modifying/
spinning one duplicate in a new direction that has value
on its own.
Or...
If the page is not important and won't be mistaken as abuse,
ignore it.
The other solution, if you don't want any of the simple
solutions....
Make sure that only the main page with the original content,
the one you want Google to use, is included in your Sitemap
XML file. If you don't have one, you can build one using a
sitemap generator. Do a Google search for that term and
you'll find several.

Or you could put a META NO ROBOTS tag on the other page(s).
This will tell the robots to stay away from the page(s).
The bottom line...
Keep it real. Avoid making any serious mistakes,
intentional or accidental. Fix them if you do. Prevent or
ignore the rest, as circumstances dictate.
And for Off-Site Duplicate Content?
Scrapers -- Google says, "Don't fret too much about sites
that scrape (misappropriate and republish) your content.
Though annoying, it's highly unlikely that such sites can
negatively impact your site's presence in Google. If you do
spot a case that's particularly frustrating, you are welcome
to file a DMCA request to claim ownership of the content and
have us deal with the rogue site."
In other words, Google is getting better and better at
finding and ignoring/penalizing the bad guys. This would
include plagiarizers.
Pay attention to this point, though, if you syndicate your
material in any way (including article submission)...
"If you syndicate your content on other sites, make sure
they include a link back to the original article on each
syndicated article."
Why? Because the engine has to pick one of the copies. You
want it to be the original, on your site. So Google looks at
date of publication, inbound links to that page, etc., etc.
If the article-receiving site won't do that, create a
different version. Much different. Like a summary. Or
don't submit the article to them.
Another thought on syndicating content -- don't syndicate
your most recent material. Make sure it has time to be
found by Google. Let a "date of publication" ripen to be
sure that date is well before any other date Google might find.
Google is not perfect. It's possible that duplicate content
on other sites may rank above your original content, even if
you do the above. Make sure the your original-content page
is indexed at Google.
If all is OK, you likely are being outranked by a more
authoritative site, even though your content appeared first.
For future articles, follow the above suggestions to avoid
a recurrence.
Key Lesson...
Duplicate content does not have "site-wide" consequences
(unless you're being bad). It just gets filtered out.
