Tips for Finding Contact Information
Have you ever found a great Web site, and wanted to contact
the site owner personally, but could only find a generic
contact form?
Talking with someone in person is, of course, the best way
to get someone's undivided attention. However, when the
person you want to contact is not nearby, which is nearly
always the case online, being able to talk with them on the
phone is the next best thing. Following that, finding a
personal e-mail address typically allows you to reach the
decision-maker as opposed to admin or support staff.
Unfortunately, finding a personal e-mail address or a real
phone number frequently presents a challenge. If you really
want to be able to talk to a site owner in person, try one
or more of the following strategies for finding a personal
e-mail address or a real phone number...
Tip #1 -- Check the "About Me/Us/This Site" Page
First look for an "About Us" or "About This Site" type of
page. You can sometimes find a person's direct e-mail
address or phone number on these pages. Watch for different
formatting (ex., john [at] myisp [dot] com or no dashes in a
phone number or the area/calling code at the end of the
numbers rather than at the beginning).

Tip #2 -- Hunt for Clues
More and more Web sites these days are providing generic
contact forms due to spam issues. Occasionally, though, you
can find a personal e-mail or phone number somewhere in the
content.
Look for clues such as...
o Hints of the owner's name
o Location
o His or her other sites/blogs
Carefully review...
o The site's footer
o Forums
o Message Boards
o Blog comments
o Alt tags on images

Tip #3 -- Use the Search Tool
Use the search function on the site and enter any personal
clues you have picked up, including a name, address, e-mail
address, location, etc. Often you can find an alternative
phone number by doing this type of "detective" digging.

Tip #4 -- Investigate Phone Number Look-up Sites
The following are some of the many free or membership sites
where you can sometimes get phone numbers and e-mail
addresses...

Be forewarned. Some of the above sites (and others like
them) will often give you partial information and then link
to a page where you have to pay to get the rest of the info.
It will be up to you whether or not you want to pay a fee
to find a phone number.
With time and perseverance, you can usually find some type
of legitimate phone number. However, paying for this
information may be worth the time savings to you.

Tip #5 -- Check Out Domain Search Sites
Domain Search Web sites are another place where you can
sometimes find a real e-mail address and phone number.
Privacy options which hide this information are becoming
more widely used, but you can often find a site owner's
original administrative information. A few options
include...

Tip #6 -- Try Alexa's Wayback Machine
Check Alexa.com's Wayback Machine. Enter a specific domain
name in Alexa's search box. Then click on the Overview link
on the results page. This will bring you to a page where
you will find the Wayback Machine link in the left-hand
navbar.
People are much more willing to disclose personal contact
info when they first establish a site. As they grow, they
tend to pull back a bit.

Finding and using a personal e-mail address will usually
give you a better chance of receiving a response from
someone. Reaching them by phone brings an even greater
likelihood for "connecting."
Contrary to what we often read online, that no one answers
his or her phone anymore, most small business owners/Web
site owners will answer or return phone calls, especially if
you leave a sincere and professional message that interests
them.
Give these strategies a try and get better results when
trying to connect with a Web site owner.
