Why Acrobat?

So... why are you only offering your book in Adobe's Acrobat Reader format?

Great question. Acrobat has so many advantages that it is the overwhelming choice for publishers of information...

1) Acrobat Reader has a huge installed base. And for those who don't already have it, it is a free download. It's truly wonderful software that empowers you to access tons of excellent, well-formatted information. More and more sites are using Acrobat to distribute information.

Still, we hesitated before we decided to publish it only in the Acrobat format. We worried about losing sales because not everyone owns Acrobat, and because people might not take the time to download it. But the Acrobat format simply had too many advantages over the next best choice (html-based book)...

2) Best of all worlds -- Acrobat has all the same hyperlinking and multimedia functionality of html. But here's the really huge advantage over a Web-based html book -- once you download and install it, the whole book now sits on your computer. This means...

  • you own it
  • no need to log onto the Web just to read a section that you need to quickly review
  • linking is much faster (so is multimedia), since it all happens on your computer instead of via the low-speed Web

3) Consistent Look and Pagination -- This is why it's even better than a an html-based book that you download onto your computer. The Acrobat version of MYSS! looks absolutely great. And it looks and paginates exactly the same, whether you see it on a Mac, or with LINUX, or with Windows NT, 95, 98 or even 3.1 -- that way, we can all talk to each other and have the "same book" in front of our eyes!

So you get a wonderful reading experience. If you're a professional educator, you know how important presentation is. In the words of many readers, "MYSS! is just plain fun to read."

If you're like me, you know that learning is much, much easier if the experience is a delight. The e-mail we get confirms this over and over -- no other widely available technology can come close. And, of course, it's the e-mail that we don't get that is just as important -- everyone loves the format, while no one complains about Acrobat.

4) Totally cross-platform -- Other possibilities, such as Word or other word-processing or e-boook programs, simply don't offer full cross-platform functionality (i.e, would not run on one or more of Mac, LINUX, or Windows).

New! MYSS! is available for LINUX users, too!

It amazes me that some "experts" think it's a mistake to publish in Acrobat. To be truthful, I was a touch nervous because of this sentiment in the community. So we were ready to quickly offer the book in other formats if it proved to be necessary. It was not necessary -- everybody absolutely loves the format.

It all goes back to the most important discussion in this entire FAQ -- exploding misconceptions through try-try-try.
