How He Went From America-Poor to America Top 3%

I measure success by how many lives I can change, not by how much money I make from selling.Travis Wilkerson

Welcome to A Christmas Carol — SiteSell-style! Each day we’re going to re-introduce one of our successful SBIers and their amazing stories. Like the Ghost of Christmas Past, we’ll revisit these tales of old and see what lessons we can glean.

For this first Christmas story, we’re visiting with Travis Wilkerson of who, when he was a child, had no running water or bathrooms.

His family in rural Virginia was just that poor.

For baths, we pumped water from a well, heated it up on the stove, and then we all took a bath in a galvanized tin tub. Our household toilet was a 5-gallon paint bucket and our outside toilet was a wood shack over a hole in the ground (aka an ‘outhouse’).

Yet today, Travis Wilkerson runs a successful online business that teaches others how to invest in stock options. How did he get there?

Well, as Travis tells it, there were three main events that shaped his career path and led him to the success he enjoys today.

The Mentor

First, while serving in the U.S. Army, Travis met a man who would eventually become one of several mentors to young Wilkerson.

Because of his circumstances, Travis was raised to believe that anyone with money was evil and greedy. And yet, he decided to listen to what this older man had to say about investing.

And a spark was lit.

Travis fell in love with the idea and the promise of investing. And he was good at it too! So good that it became all that he talked about. So much so that his wife started to get sick of hearing about it. Which leads us to the second major event:

The Blog

In the hope that it would give him a creative outlet (and ear) for his investing ideas and thoughts, Travis’s wife suggested that he start a blog.

After he’d thought about it for a while, Travis decided that was actually a good idea and started to share his passion for investing that way.

He realized that through written content, he would be able to reach an audience interested in learning more about investing. And that one day he might be able to monetize that audience.

The thing was, the blog didn’t work. He was never able to build enough sustained traffic to create any momentum.

The Online Business

That’s when Travis discovered Solo Build It!.

Way more than a blog, Solo Build It! provides online solopreneurs with the process, tools and guidance they need to build a lasting structure for their business.

New members learn how to organize a content-rich site so that readers find what they’re looking for, and search engines index and rank the content high in the results.

Armed with that much-needed direction, Travis went on to build a terrific business. More importantly, he was able to put himself in a position to “give back” — one of the tenets of his original mentors that he continues to hold dear.

He has designed his site so that readers can take their time to learn as much as they’re willing to learn, and only “upgrade” to a paid product when they feel they’re ready. That’s not to suggest that building the kind of business Travis has doesn’t take work. It does. But, like Solo Build It!, Travis has positioned his business to help others avoid mistakes and wasted time.

Nothing happens overnight.
You simply have to do the hard work.
There is no way around it.”

As we’re whisked away by the Ghost of Christmas Past, back to present-day, overlooking the streets crowded with busy people bustling through the Christmas season, we’re reminded of how important things like family really are.

Just like Ebenezer Scrooge, even we sometimes need to be challenged by such stories in order to truly recognize what’s important to us, and what we need to do to change.

Don’t let another Christmas pass by while your dreams of owning a business fester in your belly like a bit of undigested cheese. Throw open the curtains and renew your lease on life! It doesn’t matter how young or old you are. Now is the time to get started.

With SiteSell’s Holiday Special in full swing, there’s never been a better time.
