Unstuck: A “How I Quit My Day Job” Story!

How I Quit My Day Job

Peter stared at the cheerful winter wonderland scene in front of him. Not for the first time he wished he could see how the weather actually was outside, but this stupid cubicle wall obscured his view. Lately it also obscured his mind.

He had felt so happy when he landed this job 5 years ago. “A big achievement,” everyone told him, clapping him on shoulder, “to get a position at a world renowned insurance company directly after college. Especially in this tough economy!”

At first it was great. Nice colleagues, a pleasant enough boss, decent pay, great medical and dental benefits, and free lunch. When the initial excitement wore off though, Peter realized that processing insurance claims and reviewing policy modifications wasn’t as satisfying as he tried to tell himself.

Being stuck for 50+ minutes in rush-hour traffic every day didn’t make it any better either. Peter felt stuck, literally and metaphorically. He became moody and bad tempered. His wife got so concerned that she convinced him to see a therapist. The therapist advised him to follow his passion, to do something that he really enjoyed doing.

Well, he could talk all day about international economics, especially all the intricate details and possible pitfalls of an import / export business. There must be small companies and start-ups out there who would need and pay for his advice? But how could he find those clients? Going through the yellow pages book and doing hours of cold calling didn’t sound too intriguing.

Plus, he couldn’t just quit his day job. He had a wife, a 3 year old son and a second child on its way. They recently moved into a new house, with a mortgage to pay.

If he could just figure out how to build up his own consulting business in his spare time, that would be the first step. He knew there must be a way.

Then, one day after work, while browsing YouTube to relax, he came across a video of a young man who expressed exactly what he felt… there must be a better way!

Peter was excited. What was this product the guy in the video recommended? Ah yes, SBI! by a company called SiteSell. Peter had never heard about them, so he checked out their website. He liked what he read…

  • an all-in-one package
  • everything you need to build an online business
  • no tech savviness required
  • a step-by-step action guide and lots of tutorials
  • an active forum and 24/7 customer support.

SBI!’s Content-Traffic-PREsell-Monetize process made sense to him…

He would write about topics related to his theme of how to run an import / export business (Content).

These web pages would then be found by people interested in this topic (Traffic).

And because he delivered lots of great information for free, they would see him as the expert he was and get to trust him (PREsell), so that – when the timing was right – they would hire him as their consultant (Monetize).

This was much better than cold calling. The clients would come to him, not the other way round. And he could write about everything he knew about an import / export business. Finally his knowledge would be put to good use.

And the best thing? He could build his website and online business at his own pace, in his spare time, from home. He set himself a demanding, but in his opinion, achievable goal: I will hand in my resignation exactly 1 year from today.

Today is that day. No more staring at cubicle walls. Peter got unstuck.
