Inside our company, we like to say, ‘Think until it hurts, so you can see what others can’t see and do what others can’t do.’Gary Friedman, CEO of Restoration Hardware
Online business owners like to get a lot done in a day. Many have day jobs, families, and other responsibilities in addition to their online businesses. That’s a lot to manage! So when I read this Fast Company quote from Gary Friedman, CEO of Restoration Hardware, it was SBI! owners I thought of immediately.
In SiteSell parlance, “think until it hurts” is part of BAM… Brain, Attitude, Motivation. OK, so we don’t talk about thinking as hurting, but both reminders make their points. To run a successful business, there must be some thought that goes into it each step of the way.
Over the years in the Forums, we’ve heard various SBI! owners talk about how they have made their online businesses successful. Yes, they use the SBI! tools (like Analyze It! and Brainstormer). Yes, they follow the Action Guide. But they also talk about taking thinking time to make sure that they aren’t just acting. They’re acting with purpose, and with a definite plan.
In general, whether you have SBI! or SBI! for WP or neither, here are some tips from successful online business owners for better productivity and balance in your life and business.
Turn off the television.
In the U.S., most adults watch over 5 hours of television per day!* What if if only 30 minutes of that time was spent, instead, on thinking about planning your business. Imagine that… give up one sitcom and develop great business ideas! Turn off the TV for 2 hours per day (that’s one less movie, or two fewer cop shows) and you can start your successful online empire!
Get up earlier.
What time do you wake up? Do you hit the snooze button until you’re almost late and reluctantly pour yourself out of bed with barely enough time to get dressed before you start your day? Or do you get up early, while the world is still quiet, and practice a routine that helps you to start the day feeling strong? Even 10 minutes of planning time each day could allow you to focus on the activities that take you where you want to be.
Schedule planning time.
Searching the SBI! owner forums, there are over 700 pages of topics related to planning. Planning takes not only time, but also information. So you could have all of the brains in the world to enable you to “think until it hurts”, but without additional information, or additional input, you might not benefit from all of the thinking time in the world.
Use planning time to…
- read about what other business owners are doing,
- to observe what other successful people have done,
- to figure out what steps you need to take to implement your next (fill in the blank).
With practice you can tap into a whole new area of your thinking apparatus! 🙂 Sure, it takes a lot of work to juggle a life and a business. Spend a little time each day thinking about the details so that you’re really living your life (and not getting dragged by it)!
