How To Become An Expert Online
Becoming an expert on anything is not as difficult as some may think. A lot of people believe that you need a ton of schooling, a degree or two under your belt, or decades of professional experience. While any one or all of those things may aid you in your quest, the lack of any of those is certainly not going to keep you back from becoming an expert. And they are definitely not the most important things.
The most important thing you can have is passion. Passion for your subject matter. A passion for what you do or want to do. What do you love? What are you so enraptured with that you need it like you need air? What can you do or talk about for hours and be having so much fun with that you glance at the clock and notice that hours have flown by?
If you can qualify anywhere in there, you can, and may already be, an expert. Since we’re specifically addressing how to become an expert online, let’s focus on that. When your expertise is transferred online, the sky is the limit. On the Internet, it’s never a matter of “can it be done?” but “how do I get it done?” I believe that there is nothing that you cannot achieve online. All you need to do is figure it out, go after it with everything you have, and things will begin to fall into place.
So, what is the first step? We need to return to loving what you are doing. When the line between work and play becomes blurred, you’re touching the sweet spot to being an expert in your particular field.
Everyone knows something about something. Figure out what stirs you in the depths of your soul and then figure out a way to transfer it into the online world. How can you turn that love into an income?
The beauty of the online world is that you don’t need a storefront, overhead, employees, and tons of money. There are so many ways of turning your expertise into cash, it’s mind-boggling. Business on the cheap!
Once you’ve decided that you’re going to build yourself as an expert in your field, it’s time to let the world know about it, too. How can you do that? Here are a few ways to let the world know that you’re as groovy as you say you are.
#1. Start writing!
A couple days a week, you can share your brilliant mind, ideas, and expertise through the vehicle of new pages added to your web site. A web site is the man hub for all the other good stuff you do within your niche (social media, blogging, YouTube, etc). The search engines eat up new content and a niche-focussed web site is the perfect vehicle for that.
A web site with the addition of a some sort of of forum or blog (consider SBI!’s Content 2.0 or Blogets) is a perfect way to build community and get dialog going back and forth. When readers find that you know what you’re talking about and discover that there is a real person behind that knowledge through dialog, you’ll grow your fan-base into something powerful. Transfer that content over to a Vlog (video blog) on YouTube and you’re hitting it out of the ball park!
#2. Make Thoughtful Comments
Participating in discussions on social media platforms like Facebook and Twitter and in forums is a great way to establish yourself as an online expert in your field. Help and be helped. People who invest in others without asking for anything in return are the ones who gain a faithful fan-base. It’s all about the PRE-Sell!
#3. Question And Answer Sites
The same as above goes for these sort of sites. Overt promotion is frowned upon, so tread lightly. Once again, it’s all about the PRE-Sell.
Social media is an awesome medium to get yourself known. Facebook and Twitter allow you to establish yourself as an online expert in your field from a business to consumer relationship. If you’re looking to grow your connections with others in your field or a related field, connect with people on LinkedIn. That is a social medium built for B2B (Business-to-business) individuals and companies. You have to hit it from all angles!
#5. Giving it time
Rome wasn’t built in a day and neither is a good, well-established, business, offline or online. You have to give yourself time to build your reputation as an online expert in your field. Those are real people behind that monitor and relationships and trust are things that take time to cultivate and grow.
Keep moving forward at a slow and steady pace. Don’t get discouraged if things stall for a bit. You need to give yourself room and time to grow. Once people begin to catch wind of how much you know, you’ll know it, too, and begin reaping the benefits that anyone who has built a reputation as an expert in their field will. You’ll get there. 😉
